Lorde Recommends

Lorde has achieved something no other New Zealander has - two Grammy Awards including the coveted best song award. This Tweet from her it suggests she may also be a reader:

OK, so she read this teen book when she was 8! Maybe she is as sophisticated a reader as she is musician.

Feed by M.T. Anderson:  For Titus and his friends, it started out like any ordinary trip to the moon - a chance to party during spring break and play with some stupid low-grav at the Ricochet Lounge. But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires.

BEFORE I FALL by Lauren Oliver

What if you only had one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all: looks, popularity, the perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it turns out to be her last.

The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning. Living the last day of her life seven times during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

This book was in the adult collection at Paraparaumu Library but I had read some reviews about it being a great young adult book. So I found it, read it, really liked it and changed its home at the library to the teen section. Why does it belong there? Well, obviously because it is about a teenager. But more importantly because the main theme of how we relate to the people around us is set firmly in a teen context and I think teens may get more out of the story more than adults.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green

The blurb: Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

Although the grim shadow of cancer looms large over the characters it is more than a story about someone coping with cancer. There is terrible sadness but also the discovery of love with moments of joy and humour woven into this engrossing story.
