Isn't it great to be on holiday? We hope you are enjoying the break from school. Think of all the extra reading time you have now! Kapiti Libraries are open as usual, except the statutary holidays, and we hope to see you at the library now and then. Our Friday night teen programmes take a break until February but there will be art & craft sessions at Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Otaki Libraries in January. More info about these will be here on the blog, on the website and in the libraries soon.
Have a very Merry Christmas.

BLOOD TRACKS by Paula Rawsthorne
A family tragedy - was it suicide or was it something more sinister?
Gina is a runner. With her feet pounding the ground and her dad watching, she feels as though she can fly. But when her dad dies in dramatic circumstances, Gina refuses to accept the explanations she is given. Struggling to find the truth, Gina finds herself plunged into a world far removed from the one she has known; a world of lies, crime and betrayal. A world that will make her question everyone and everything around her. And a world she can't run from.
I thought this was a gripping thriller with plenty of twists and turns to make it exciting from start to finish. Gina's story is one of tragedy yet determination to uncover the truth and the villian in the story is a particularly nasty character.

CoverFlip
Imagine if a well known book were actually written by someone of the opposite gender. The pages might look the same but what about the cover? Would the designs be different? How might that change the way we perceive a book? Young adult author Maureen Johnson presented a challenge to her readers and received hundreds of responses in the form of new cover designs. Some of them are shown below. What do you think? How are your initial thoughts or feelings about a book affected by the gender of the author and the cover design?

THE MAZE RUNNER by James Dashner
This book is advertised as one that fans of the Hunger Games will love. They are both fast paced dystopian novels with gripping story lines. I enjoyed the exciting plot development but discovered the end wasn't really the end because The Maze Runner is the first book in a trilogy. I will have to read on!

Summer Volunteens
What is a Volunteen? A Volunteen is someone between the ages of 13 – 18 who volunteers (for no payment) primarily help young people report in for the summer reading programme and finale parties. You must enjoy working with children, be willing to work a total of at least 8 hours during the summer break, and attend a one hour training session. Volunteens may also assist with other projects during slow desk times.
If you are interested in being a Volunteen this summer please contact one of the Youth Services Librarians at your local library. Applications close Friday (29th November) so you'll have to be quick if you're finding out about the Volunteens programme here on our new blog.
